Taft Museum of Art

The Taft Museum Of Art In Cincinnati

The Taft Museum of Art is inside a historical home that is on the registry of historic places, both nationally and in the state. It was built in 1820 and is the oldest wooden structure in the area. It was originally built for Martin Baum and is a splendid example of Federal architecture of the Palladian style. It is now known as simply the Taft Museum, but had once incorporated all of the names that had once lived there.

When the home was owned by Nicholas Longworth before the Civil War, he commissioned an African American painter, Robert S. Duncanson, to create a mural in the entryway. It is now renowned as one of the greatest murals to adorn the inside of a home in the entire world.

The rich history continued with the Taft family who bequeathed the home to the city in 1927, shortly before the deaths of Anna and Charles, who had lived in the home. They included their personal collection of 690 pieces of fine art. Interestingly, Charles’ half brother, William Howard Taft, who became president had accepted his nomination in 1908 on the home’s patio. After some renovations it became the Taft museum in 1932.

Exhibits at Taft Museum

The exhibits are constantly changing, but one will always remain, which is the original collection donated by the Taft family. You can find that in the Federal Villa. It is known as one of the finest collections in the United States.

One exhibit that is currently extremely popular is the Elegant Geometry: British and American Mosaic Patchwork Quilts. There are quilts that are up to 300 years old. This exhibit highlights the extreme skill and attention to detail that had to be developed by the women that created these geometrical mosaic designs. It also shows how the trend developed and changed through the years. The vast majority of the collection is comprised of works from women that had resided in the East and Midwestern regions in the country and date into the 1800s.

To enhance the learning aspect of this exhibit there is also the opportunity to learn the techniques that were used to create these quilts. There are pop-up demonstrations held sporadically and are given by Silk Rose Textiles. They will showcase a number of techniques and styles that have been used through the history of quilting. The demonstrations are typically held one Saturday each month and are included with admission. It should also be noted that this exhibit will only be there until early 2018.

You can also expect to find special exhibits during the holiday season that showcase various works of art that are tailored to that theme. Not only will framed art be shown, but you will get a glimpse into the past by viewing various decorations and ornaments that would have been somewhat of common place in past eras. The exhibit is appropriately named Antique Christmas and is sure to please the senses of visitors of all ages.

One of the most appealing aspects will be the part of the exhibit that highlights what Santa might have left under the tree in years past. There will be jack-in-the-boxes, dancing antique dolls as well as a vintage lionel train set. Even young children will be able to appreciate the novelty these toys once had and see first hand how much has changed over the years.

Decorations that can be viewed will include a vast collection of stunning, heavenly angels, mini german lighted homes and Santas of the past. One feature of this expansive display is that while many things have changed from centuries past, there are a number of themes that remain the same. Making these comparisons is one of the most enjoyable things this particular exhibit has to offer.
